Managing Budgets and Financial Plans

Gain the core skills and tools to help manage budgets in the public sector

Managing Budgets and Financial Plans

IPAA Victoria’s Managing Budgets and Financial Plans course will provide you with the core skills and tools to help manage your budget in a public sector environment.

Public sector professionals rely on funding to deliver high-quality services to the community and need to be able to account for public money used in delivering public services.

Course overview

You will gain a comprehensive knowledge in areas such as:

  • learning practical tools and techniques to help you manage public sector budgets
  • using case studies to demonstrate a range of skills to effectively manage budgets
  • applying contemporary budgeting practice, concept and terminology
  • allocating and understand public sector budget effectively.

Course outcomes

Participants will be equipped with a deeper understanding of:

  • practical government budgeting frameworks and processes
  • core skills for developing and adapting budgets, monitoring and reporting
  • the difference between an accrual budget and cash budget
  • how to manage your budget consistently with whole-of-government processes.

Course audience

This course is designed for those who:

  • program or project managers with budget and cost centre responsibilities
  • work as a team leader
  • members of an agency or business finance team
  • looking to improve budget knowledge and skills.

This was an excellent course in introducing the discipline and rigour expected of government officers and teams when preparing annual or multi-year budgets for their operational units and projects. Mark was excellent in making a technical topic quite accessible to an audience with a varied background and level of financial management understanding.

Athanasios Athanasopoulos (Suburban Rail Loop Authority)

Coming into the course with a limited understanding of financial planning and budgeting, I now feel confident about working with finance colleagues and ‘destination reading’ financial reports for my division.

Rukhsana Tajin, Vic Dept of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions

The course itself is a great refresher but also offers a good foundational run-through of the financial frameworks and budgeting with a government lens. Would highly recommend this as well for those who have zero background in accounting/budget management as Mark did a great job in conveying what can be quite a bland topic (particularly for those who aren’t comfortable with numbers), into an engaging workshop.

Kenny Tran, Department of Families, Fairness and Housing

As a finance professional I was really impressed by the delivery of some complex government accounting principles in an easy and engaging program. I highly recommend this program for all levels of your organisation
