IPAA Victoria’s What’s on the Minister’s Mind? course offers a deep dive into how to work effectively with Ministers and Ministerial Offices to deliver quality public policy advice.

Course overview

You will gain a comprehensive knowledge of how to work with Ministers through: 

  • Learning what Ministers and their political advisors value in policy advice.
  • How to work effectively with stakeholders to get great policy outcomes. 
  • Identify the influences within the public sector that impact modern-day policy making. 
  • Understand ethical decision making, core values and the integrity frameworks of the VPS. 

Course outcomes

Participants will gain a comprehensive overview of how to work with Ministers exploring: 

  • Working with Ministers and ministerial offices to deliver quality public policy advice 
  • Understanding what Ministers want in advice for the various roles they must fulfil 
  • Working effectively with ministerial advisors, understanding their role. 
  • Developing strategies and approaches for delivering ‘frank and fearless’ policy advice 
  • Navigating a complex ‘authorising environment’ including the parliament, cabinet, cabinet and parliamentary committees, statutory offices and other democratic architecture. 

          Course audience

          The ideal course participant is someone who:

          • Completed IPAA Victoria’s Policy Skills or Gain the Policy Edge course.
          • Looking to advance their policy career.
          • Obtain a better understanding of interacting with Ministers, parliamentary committees, cabinet committees, ministerial advisors and Deputy Sectaries.
